Berlin & The Harz Mountains

Sunday 4th to Tuesday 13th October 2015

Join us on this tour to the great destination of Berlin. After pick ups in our local area we will board the overnight ferry from Hull to Rotterdam where you will have your own cabin for a good nights sleep. There will be an option to upgrade your cabin and pre book a meal onboard. On embarkation nicely refreshed, we will travel by luxury coach to vist the Möhne dam on route to our hotel in the picturesque town of Goslar in the Harz Mountains. Goslar will be our base for 3 days and we will include excursions to the medieval and picturesque towns and villages in this region and also free time whilst we are here. Accomodation is half board at the 4 star Hotel Bären which is situated on the edge of the town.

We then move on to Berlin  where we will be staying in the central part of the city in the Raddison Park Inn near Alexanderplatz. There is so much to see here that we have decided to include a 6 hour guided tour to highlight the places you will want to go back to and sights a little further afield so you can concentrate on the areas that are easier to get to on your free days.

We will then have 2 days free time to visit all the places you have planned to see.

Accomodation is bed and breakfast to enable those who have ventured further afield to eat out at a restaurant of their choice. There is also an option to eat at the hotel, the costs are detailed below.

Möhne Dam

We make a stop here at the Möhne Dam on route  to our first destination of Goslar, See for yourself the dam and imagine what it was like in 1943.

Operation Chastise was an attack on German dams carried out on 16–17 May 1943 by Royal Air Force No. 617 Squadron, subsequently publicised as the "Dam Busters",using a specially developed "bouncing bomb" invented and developed by Barnes Wallis. The Möhne and Edersee Dams were breached, causing catastrophic flooding of the Ruhr valley and of villages in the Eder valley.

Goslar:

Having a good look at the Dam we head to Goslar and the Hotel Bären where we will stay for the next 3 nights with half board accomodation. Goslar was for centuries the favoured seat of government in northern Germany and at the same time a centre of Christianity. The spires of the 47 churches, chapels and monasteries delineated the town’s unique silhouette. It was referred to as the “Rome of the North”.

Still today the view of the townscape with the steeples of the five large parish churches is impressive when viewed from the knoll upon which the Imperial Palace stands. The many crooked, narrow, cobble-stoned streets in the Old Town are an adventure of their own, where each house tells its own story and secret nooks and crannies await discovery. For visitors it is best to drive to the large “Kaiserpfalz Nord” carpark at the foot of the Imperial Palace (Kaiserpfalz). From here the impressive Romanesque Imperial Palace opens up to view.

Whilst in Goslar we will be exploring this beautiful part of Germany and 2 excursions will be included

After our stay in this lovely part of Germany we head to Berlin with its much different architecture and way of life. Largely owing to World War II, Berlin’s architecture has a fascinating range, from the historical to high modernism and more controversial postmodern projects. A visit to the Reichstag, the home of the German Parliament, provides the perfect overview. Opened in 1894, its renovation was masterminded by British super-architect Norman Foster and completed in 1999. The roof is an entirely glass structure, allowing for a panoramic view of the city right from the centre of government. Entrance to the roof is free but you must register in advance; once you’re in make this a totally informative experience by plugging into the audio tour and heading to the open roof for an overview of the sites all around. Alternative views can be found by taking Europe’s fastest elevator to the Panoramapunkt on the 24th and 25th floors of the Kollhoff Tower in Potsdamer Platz. Over in the east of the city is Fernsehturm, rising over 200 metres above Alexanderplatz. The iconic tower is Europe’s fourth tallest free-standing structure and the stainless steel sphere contains a revolving restaurant and viewing gallery. On clear days visibility can reach 40 kilometres.
